Rolling black-outs have made many people realise that maybe a normal UPS system is actually a temporary solution to what might well turn out to be a much longer-term problem!
As a result, many people are looking at one of our popular options which we have named:” The Pre-Solar UPS’
Basically this is the compilation of a backup system with a solar Inverter – charger, coupled to some solar deep, and high cycle, batteries.
The smallest unit we recommend would be a 1200W 24V, Solar Inverter charger coupled with 2 x 200Ah or 100AH solar batteries.
This will allow a nominal peak load of some 1.2Kw – thus enough for a TV/Decoder/ 5 x E-S lights, Laptop and even a fridge (although you don’t really need that yet, with power-outs only lasting 2-6 hours - at present!). However, a good feature of these Inverters-Chargers is their ability to sustain a 70% overload for up to 4 minutes thus facilitating starting up of motors, pumps and compressors (fridges, freezers, etc.). So, effectively, your 1200W inverter can handle 2000W for short periods without tripping out, or switching to Mains for assistance.
The 2 x 180Ah batteries supplied will give you some 3200Wh of reserve power when discharged to 70% for UPS work – which equates to around 10+ hours without fridge, and some 6 hours with a fridge.
